Born from a photograph of a Japanese chōchin lantern captured by Designer Diego Cortizas on a walk through Tokyo. Through his signature kaleidoscope process, the image was folded and mirrored across itself until it became an entirely new pattern, printed onto lightweight fabric that resists creasing and travels well. Cut as an áo yếm, the traditional Vietnamese halter with a covered front and open back, tied at the neck and waist.
Care
We recommend a cold, delicate cycle, preferably in a mesh laundry bag, with a mild detergent. Reshape gently and allow to air dry naturally.

The story
TOKYO CHŌCHIN
This piece is a meeting of two countries. The fabric was born from a photograph Designer Diego Cortizas took on a walk through Tokyo. A chōchin, the traditional Japanese paper lantern, vertical bamboo ribs, calligraphy painted down the front in black ink. He shot it fast and slightly off-axis, the way he shot most things. He brought the image home and put it through his signature kaleidoscope process, folding and mirroring it across itself until the lantern stopped being a lantern and became a pattern. The fabric was then cut into an áo yếm, one of the oldest silhouettes in Vietnamese dress. A covered front, an open back, tied at the neck and waist. A shape that has moved through Vietnamese life for as long as there has been a Vietnam. The pattern is Japanese. The garment is Vietnamese. They meet in the Hanoi atelier. A photograph is a record of a place. A kaleidoscope is a record of the experience of being there.
