The story

HUNDRED LONGEVITIES

In Vietnamese decorative tradition, the character chữ Thọ (壽), meaning long life and good health, has been rewritten across the centuries in countless stylized forms. Some are circular, some square, some folded into maze-like geometries. A design that gathers many of these variations together is called Bách Thọ, the wish for longevity offered a hundred times over. The print is made in in mộc bản, the traditional Vietnamese technique of hand-carved woodblock printing that gave rise to Đông Hồ folk prints. Each block is carved by a local woodcarver, inked at the atelier, and pressed onto the fabric by hand. A second pass traces each symbol in fine embroidered stitches, holding every variation cleanly in place. Cut from Dui, a light Vietnamese silk that breathes with the wearer, the dress falls in a soft line and moves easily through warm days, carrying a hundred small wishes with it.
