The story
CROSSING COLORS
A composition drawn in ribbon. Long strands of silk taffeta, each a different color, are cut by hand and stitched across the front of the cape in crossing arcs, like brushstrokes left on a black canvas. Each ribbon is laid in place one at a time, and the color builds slowly across the wool. There is no closure, no fastening. The cape is meant to be drawn around the shoulders and let fall, held in place only by the way it sits on the body. The base is wool, weighted enough to hold its shape and to keep the wearer warm. Ribbons of taffeta silk catch the light where the wool absorbs it, so the piece reads differently from a distance than it does up close. A cape that carries color across the shoulders through cold evenings.
