Batik Lines Tunic

Oyster Linen Batik Appliqué

セール価格$350.00
Size

Long curved strips of Vietnamese batik in bright multicolor patterns are applied by hand down the front and back of this tunic, arching over the shoulders and meeting at the center. Fine red running-stitch embroidery traces the fabric between the strips, and small mother-of-pearl buttons run down the center front. Applied, embroidered, and finished by hand at the Hanoi atelier.

The story

BATIK LINES

The piece was drawn in batik. Rather than dyeing a pattern into the linen, finished batik fabric was cut into long strips and used the way an artist uses ink. Each strip became a single line, curving from shoulder to hem, applied by hand until the whole tunic looked like a drawing made of textile. The strips carry their own patterns inside them. A deep green wound with paisley. A blue printed with peacock feathers. A red bright with folk florals. When they arch across the linen, they don't sit still. They read like brush marks left by a hand that moved fast, each one a different color and mood, all pulled together by the calm cream of the fabric underneath. A tunic composed of two crafts. The batik, dyed in one place. The linen, cut and assembled in another. Joined here as line meeting canvas, and worn easily through the day.
