The story

TREE OF LONGEVITY

Many forms of chữ Thọ, the Vietnamese character for long life, gather down the front of this dress and branch out like a family tree. Each circle is a single life, its own shape, its own color. Read together, they are the shape a family makes across generations: parents and children, elders and grandchildren, wishes handed forward one to the next. The tradition of gathering many stylized forms of Thọ into one composition is called Bách Thọ, meaning many longevities. It has appeared in Vietnamese decorative arts for centuries on ceramics, metalwork, and ceremonial objects. Here, that same idea is arranged as a tree, with each character stamped by hand using carved wooden blocks and traced in fine embroidered stitches. Cut from Dui in a soft shift silhouette with inner ties at the waist, the dress falls easily against the body and carries a family tree of small wishes with it.
